Carlsbad (the English name for Karlovy Vary) has not only rich history and tradition but also is the biggest, most popular, most visited and most beautiful spa in Czech Republic. The history begins more than 600 years ago, when Emperor Charles IV discovered the legendary positive medical effects of local springs while hunting for deer. The legend is shown on a picture on the Market Colonnade.
Carlsbad is perched in the valley of the River Tepla. Both slopes offer many targets for walks - to restaurant Diana, Deer jump with the statue of the Deer, Goethe's view, Three Crosses and many others. Lovers of golf can take advantage of the two classic 18-hole golf courses and two smaller ones. Tennis courts, squash and ricochet, horse riding or fishing – all is here. Canoeing on the river Ohre is an adventure, too. To reach for more about the history and current events, go to website www.karlovy-vary.cz
Carlsbad is located at the confluence of the rivers Tepla and Eger and specialises especially in digestive tract diseases and disorders of metabolism and glands of internal secretion. In the center of the spa bursts the warmest spring named Vridlo, one of the symbols of Karlovy Vary. Eleven other springs are coming out of earth along the river Tepla close to Lazne III.
Carlsbad is not only famous by the many thermal mineral springs used primarily for drinking, but also offers its visitors traditional spa treatments, rich cultural events and sports activities.
The best-known event in the cultural life of the spa is Carlsbad International Film Festival taking place every July. Throughout the year, however, the visitors are invited to a large number of concerts of classical and modern music, theater performances, exhibitions and other events.
